PBS is a multi-faceted, evidence-based approach which will bring significant benefits to both people being supported as well as staff.

Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) Training

Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) is the model of choice endorsed by the Department of Health, published in Transforming Care: a National Response to Winterbourne View (2013). PBS is a multi-faceted, evidence-based, approach which will bring significant benefits to both people being supported as well as staff. Its implementation within your services will herald significant cultural change, leading to improvements in quality-of-life outcomes for people being supported, relationships, skills acquisition, independence-levels, participation and competence. It is predicated on a strong values base which emphasises respect, choice and autonomy within a person-centred framework. PBS also rejects the use of punishment approaches as out-dated, counter-productive and in danger of facilitating abuse practices.

Positive Approaches to Behaviours of Concern

CPD Member logoThis CPD-certified one-day PBS theory course is applicable to all staff supporting people with behaviours of concern. The training gives a broad introduction to PBS by exploring: the concept of behaviours of concern, the behavioural model, introductory-level behavioural assessments, basic interventions to prevent behaviours of concern, and the creation of helpful learning environments.

The focus is very much on primary prevention strategies and the course therefore provides foundation-level PBS training for all care staff. It also represents recommended complementary training for staff who may additionally require instruction in reactive strategies via our PBMpro model.

The training is available either a face-to-face one-day workshop delivered by us or as a self-directed training package where you run the programme within your organisation yourself.  The self-directed version gives you all the information and materials to deliver PBS training to your employees. It can be completed by participants working alone or as part of a group run by your own course facilitator.

Values Training

Appropriate staff values, conduct and professionalism are key ingredients underpinning services providing high-quality, respectful, professional person-centred support. In many services, even those trained to use Positive Behavioural Support, it is often just assumed that all staff share the same set of professional values and professional standards.

When standards are variable, not shared by team members, or occasionally in collision, there is frequently a hope that these problems will somehow resolve themselves. Moreover, many managers find that they then spend inordinate amounts of time fire-fighting disagreements and micro-managing individual approaches and interpersonal conflicts.

It makes sense therefore to equip managers to proactively address the issue of values and professional conduct. After attending a one-day managers’ course, your managers will be given training materials to enable them to deliver a half-day course to your staff.
